The Fast of Ashura
28 elementary students in the American Diploma section fasted together and refrained from eating and drinking for the entire day on Tuesday, December 6th, the 10th day of Muharram! That evening the students gathered with 9 teachers to break the fast together with dates, water, and buttermilk followed by prayer and a meal. We recently moved into the 1433rd year of the Hijri calendar with the month of Muharram. As you may know, the day of Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is a significant day in the life of Muslims because the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “I hope from Allah that observing the fast of Ashura will expiate for the sins of the past year.”
